Geometric Animation Grid
Concept
The Geometric Animation Grid was created as an exploration of motion fundamentals -
timing, spacing, anticipation, and rhythm - visualized through a simple grid of shapes.
The goal was to strip motion design down to its essentials: movement, form, and flow.
Each animation sequence focuses on a specific principle of animation,
from easing and overlap to bounce and follow-through, using only basic shapes and colors.
By limiting the visual complexity, the focus stays entirely on how movement feels -
a pure exercise in balance, tempo, and energy.
Process
The animations were designed and composed entirely in Adobe After Effects.
I built a modular grid system where each cell acts as a small stage for testing timing and movement.
Workflow:
- Planning: mapped animation principles into a grid framework
- Design: created minimal geometric assets - circles, squares, lines, and triangles - in monochrome and accent palettes
- Animation: experimented with curves and easing to achieve organic, rhythmic motion
- Composition: synchronized multiple cells to create an overall visual rhythm across the grid
Outcome
The final animation is a motion study showcasing harmony between precision and play.
It demonstrates how simple geometric shapes can feel alive when driven by well-timed motion.
Every loop emphasizes clarity of principle rather than complexity of visuals -
a clear homage to classic animation foundations applied in modern motion design.
Reflection
This project deepened my understanding of how motion itself communicates design intent.
It taught me to think beyond visuals - focusing on timing, weight, and flow as key expressive tools.
It also reminded me that in motion design, simplicity reveals mastery:
when you remove detail, every frame and every second counts.
