Re-Dial
Concept
The Re-Dial project explores how a forgotten piece of technology can become a tool for calm, grounding, and self-reflection. I reimagined the nostalgic rotary landline phone - once a device for constant communication - as an object that encourages slowness and presence instead.
Instead of making calls, the phone becomes a doorway into small mindfulness exercises. Each tool leads to a simple grounding activity designed to help users pause, breathe, and disconnect from digital overload - even if just for a moment.
Re-Dial transforms an old device into a reminder that not all interaction has to be fast or functional. Sometimes, it can just help you return to yourself.
Process
The project was built using vanilla HTML, CSS, and PHP, with a small dynamic routing system.
The main focus was to craft an atmosphere that blends physical interaction with digital storytelling.
Key stages:
- Research: explored how old landline phones create a sense of focus and presence through their weight, slowness, and physical interaction
- Concept design: mapped out the user flow for a calming experience - from picking up the phone to choosing a grounding exercise
- Implementation: built multiple pages (
home, dial, listen) dynamically through PHP routing - Form system: added a small “Join the Challenge” form, with both frontend and backend PHP validation to ensure correct and safe field submission
- Tools: created a set of small, guided activities (breathing, reflection, grounding tasks) accessible through the interface
- Styling: kept the visuals soft and nostalgic using muted colours and gentle typography to support a calm, reflective atmosphere
The goal was to design a digital ritual rather than just an interface.

Outcome
The final piece is a web-based interactive experience accessed through a repurposed rotary phone. Each Tool leads to a short exercise that guides the user toward slowing down, focusing inward, and taking a tiny break from the noise of everyday life.
The website also includes a small signup form for visitors who want to join the challenge. It uses real PHP form handling, with validation running both in the browser and on the server, turning the playful concept into a fully functional micro-experience.

It feels familiar but reinterpreted - a blend of analog nostalgia and digital mindfulness.
Reflection
This project pushed me to think about interaction in a more emotional and introspective way. I had to design things that weren’t about efficiency or productivity, but about creating space - calm, focus, and reflection.
Working with such a nostalgic object also made me appreciate how old technology can inspire new meanings, especially when repurposed with care.
It strengthened my belief that design can be soothing, not just functional, and that small digital rituals can help people reconnect with themselves in a gentle, meaningful way.
